THE MANI HOUSE
The house in Mani
Restoration of a 19th century traditional stone house, located in the picturesque village of Agios Nikonas, at Mani Peninsula. The original house has gradually grown vertically and horizontally through the years, forming a 200 sqm three-leveled labyrinth of rooms which resulted in a very complex and impractical arrangement of spaces for the owners.
Given the situation, we were asked to interfere in the most minimal way, rearranging some of the main living areas, as well as to highlight all the traditional features of both interior and exterior spaces. Modern materials and cement finishes coexist with 100 years old stones, harmonically merging the old with the new. Various local stones and marble were used as pavement for the new terraces, wooden ceilings were preserved and painted in matching natural colors.
Our brief included the possibility of seasonal rent, so public spaces were a very important aspect of the project. The plot, overlooking the Peloponnesian sea, is also home to hundreds of olive trees and various other smaller plants. The design scheme for the outdoor spaces suggested a swimming pool, small terraces, alleys and hidden corners, blended with the natural environment creating a unique experience for all visitors.
Status: near completion.
The creative process begins with investigations on local materials, geology and surrounding natural colors and textures.
