THE CABIN HOUSE

The cabin house

A compact timber cabin house, located at the northern edge of Pavliani, Phthiotis Greece, a hidden settlement in the mountainous area of Oeta. The brief aimed in creating a peaceful sanctuary hidden in the vast wilderness. The design proposal suggested a warm and light-filled interior using local timber and plywood treated with lye and white oil to finish the interior. The house is slightly elevated and lightly connected to the ground, protecting the house from heavy weather and snow during the winter and maximizing daylight and views. The exterior cladding is also made of local timber, referencing the rural architecture of the area, while also ensuring that the cabin merges perfectly with the rugged landscape and forested vegetation. The property is accessed by stairs within a small veranda that can be used as a mud room for removing outer layers of clothing and shoes. Entrance in the ground floor leads to the main living area with a mini kitchen and a double bedroom with a bathtub that can be secluded with folded partition. The extra space in the attic hides a second smaller bedroom with sweeping views of the region’s ever-changing scenery.
